Evaluation of the antibacterial effect of hydroalcoholic extract of the galls of <i>Quercus infectoria</i> on <i>Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans</i>

Background. Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (Aa) plays a vital role in some destructive forms of periodontitis. While mechanical and chemical plaque control is the first step periodontitis treatment, side effects adjunctive agents such as chlorhexidine (CHX) mouthwash have led to application natural alternatives with minimal effects. Therefore, this study evaluated antibacterial effect hydroalcoholic extract Quercus infectoria (Qi) galls on Aa vitro. Methods. The Qi was obtained by maceration method, bacterial strain cultured. inhibition zone diameter measured through agar well diffusion method. Also, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) bactericidal (MBC) values were determined broth microdilution All experiments repeated three times. 0.2% CHX used control. Results. increased increasing extract. MIC MBC for 0.0039 0.0078 mg/mL, respectively, both bacterium similar, i.e., 2.5 which significantly higherd. Conclusion. Since other vivo studies confirmed properties its safety terms cytotoxicity mutagenicity, may be mouthwashes or local delivery systems affect periodontal biofilm.
